NORTHERN LIGHT – CONTEMPORARY GREEN BELT HOUSE TRANSFORMATION IN SURREY
Set within the rural landscape of Warlingham, Northern Light transforms a heavily altered house into a light-filled contemporary family home. The project sought to bring clarity, character and a stronger connection to its Green Belt setting, creating a home that feels both spacious and naturally rooted within the landscape.
Project Information
Although generous in size, the house no longer reflected the way the family wanted to live. A series of piecemeal additions had created disconnected spaces, poor natural light and a confused relationship with the surrounding garden.
Our design reconsiders the house as a whole, replacing this piecemeal arrangement with a carefully composed architectural response that brings clarity, balance and generosity to the home.
Central to the proposal is the introduction of a refined gabled roof form that replaces unsympathetic earlier additions and creates a more elegant silhouette within the landscape. This new roof structure allowed us to create a dramatic double-height volume at the heart of the house, drawing natural light deep into the plan and establishing a strong spatial connection between the ground and first floors.
The internal layout was completely reconfigured to better reflect contemporary family life. Living spaces were repositioned to the south-west to maximise sunlight, passive solar gain and views across the garden, while service spaces were rationalised to the northern edge of the plan. A glazed ground floor extension provides the opportunity to open up the dining area to the outdoors.
Throughout the project, the focus was on improving both the experience of the home and its relationship to the wider site. Existing outbuildings were repurposed to provide dedicated work and wellness spaces, creating a physical separation between domestic life and home working while making better use of the wider plot.
The design also significantly enhances the environmental performance of the property through upgraded thermal fabric and the integration of low-carbon technologies.
