That's a Wrap

THAT’S A WRAP

This project involved the design and construction of a stylish, wrap-around extension to a family home in East Grinstead, transforming the ground floor to create a spacious and better-planned kitchen, dining, and family area, as well as a dedicated playroom. The extension was carefully crafted to maximize natural light, foster a strong connection with the garden, and offer functional living spaces that cater to the family’s lifestyle.

A key feature of the design is the use of large bi-fold doors that open up to the garden, creating a seamless link between indoors and outdoors. This openness enhances the sense of space and brings the natural surroundings into the heart of the home. Above the dining area, a large flat rooflight floods the space with daylight, ensuring the entire area remains bright and airy throughout the day, adding to the overall feeling of openness and connection to the sky.

The new playroom, positioned adjacent to the kitchen and dining area, can be easily closed off for privacy or noise control, but still offers generous views of the garden. The space is strategically placed so that it remains visually connected to the kitchen area, ensuring easy supervision of children while also providing a dedicated zone for play.

A standout feature of the design is the exposed steel structure that supports the corner of the existing house, which was a necessary addition to ensure structural integrity. This steel frame has been left visible, contributing to the space’s industrial aesthetic and adding an element of raw, architectural beauty. The new kitchen, designed and crafted by the owner—a trained joiner—has been cleverly tailored around this exposed steel, with custom cabinetry and detailing that complement the industrial feel while offering warmth and functionality. The kitchen also cleverly conceals a hidden utility room, enhancing the overall sense of order and practicality in the space.

This project represents a careful balance of modern design, practical family living, and craftsmanship. The integration of natural materials, abundant daylight, and thoughtful spatial planning creates a welcoming, flexible environment for everyday family life while maintaining a strong connection to the outdoors.
