CREATING A TARDIS!
CREATING A TARDIS!
What better way to transform an under-used, awkward space between a house and the close-by railway line to create more space for a growing family? Create a tardis! A tapering boundary meant geometry largely had to determine the footprint of a new addition to a local house.
This clever ‘metal box’ is orientated to focus views from within to the existing garden rather than to the property boundary, and resolves the complex geometry resulting from the site layout. Not only does the result solve the awkward shape of the building, by pushing the ‘box’ toward the garden, the owners can enjoy a new connection between home and garden.
With a clever design and building completion by a local Edenbridge builder, the result is a new family room providing play space, a dining area, a new toilet and cloakroom.
Eager to squeeze every ounce of space from a design, the roof is vaulted internally providing a lofty, light-filled space with a mezzanine study area accessed via a ladder. The external wall construction facing the boundary was reversed to expose brickwork internally, giving a ‘loft-style’ or ‘warehouse’ feel to the space. This gives it an even greater sense of enlarged living space.
The project was completed within tight budget constraints through the ingenuity of the homeowner sourcing competitively priced final fixtures and fittings.
Property owners Chris and Claire were delighted with the final result; “Turner and Hoskins Architects were a joy to work with. Their enthusiasm, passion and creativity resulted in a design that continues to exceed our expectations. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.”
