A carefully considered extension and refurbishment of a family home in Surrey’s Green Belt, inspired by Mid-Century Modern principles of light, openness and connection to nature. Living in the Landscape

Set within Surrey’s Green Belt, this extension and refurbishment reimagines a family home around a simple but powerful idea: bringing the garden into everyday life.

Despite its enviable setting, the original house made surprisingly little of its mature surroundings. The kitchen was small and enclosed, windows were modestly sized, and the principal living spaces had little visual connection with the landscape beyond. The homeowners loved the location but felt disconnected from the very thing that made it special.

Drawing inspiration from Mid-Century Modern principles, the design focuses on light, openness and a stronger relationship between house and garden. A carefully considered ground-floor extension creates a generous kitchen, dining and living space where large areas of glazing frame views of the surrounding greenery and draw natural light deep into the home. What was once inward-looking is now open, bright and connected.

At first floor level, two innovative rooflights transform into balconies, creating new opportunities to engage with the landscape from the bedrooms. More than simply admitting daylight, these interventions establish a direct relationship with the garden and treetops, allowing the changing seasons to become part of everyday life.

The result is a home that feels larger, lighter and more generous without losing its domestic character. Inside and outside are no longer experienced as separate worlds, but as a continuous and carefully choreographed living environment shaped by light, views and nature.
